In honour of International Women's Day, we asked some of the leaders in our organization to share their thoughts on ways to create more inclusive and gender-balanced workplaces in the technology industry. #BalanceForBetter #IWD2019
Jennifer Johnson, Vice President, Legal Services, Ricoh Canada
It is ironic that I have helped build and lead a technology company for two decades and wouldn’t label myself a technologist. It’s time to release the limitations we put on ourselves and lean in in an authentic way - whatever that means for you. Promoting diverse backgrounds, perspectives, experience and talents is the foundation of innovation and differentiation and is fast becoming table stakes in any competitive industry. It is an exciting time for women as the era of digital transformation is providing tremendous opportunities to anyone who has a vision for a better way, is skilled at collaborating across silos and has the passion to succeed. At the end of the day, transformation is about people, not technology. Tweet This #BalanceForBetter #IWD2019

Diversity in leadership and management makes organizations stronger. Bringing together different perspectives for inclusive collaboration and discussion results in stronger teams that will provide the best possible outcome for their customers. Put yourself out there! Companies today are looking for the best person for the role, so don’t be afraid to be enthusiastic, confident, and embrace your uniqueness.Tweet This #BalanceForBetter #IWD2019

Organizations need to have an increased awareness of existing biases and do what’s needed to change them. To enable #BalanceForBetter means we need to pay close attention to the effects of these biases and be aware of who is at the table and who is not, and whose voice is the loudest and who is silent. We must change the narrative and strive to achieve an evolution in the landscape of gender balance. Tweet This #BalanceForBetter #IWD2019

To create true success, we need to tackle the hard truths surrounding unconscious bias and understand what it takes to develop an inclusive and diverse workplace. Organizations that foster a corporate culture that promotes a diversity of voices, innovative thinking and embraces change, will gain formidable competitive advantage and financial outperformance. When it comes to supporting gender equality in the workplace, it’s critical to consider the importance of work/life balance. Giving men and women alike the space to make balanced choices between work, self and family will, by it’s very nature, support the continued evolution of gender equality. These are exciting times and meaningful contribution is valued in any organization. Tweet This #BalanceForBetter #IWD2019

What drives diversity and inclusion is the recognition that an organization should visibly reflect the communities and customers they serve. Visibility allows for those who may have never considered a career in a certain industry to change their path because they related to someone similar and thought, "I can do that too!" Vote and purchase with purpose. These actions are among the most powerful and direct means for individuals and organizations to influence government and corporate behavior, especially when coupled with advocacy. Demand that candidates looking for your endorsement and your dollar champion gender equity. Be public. Be insistent. Tweet This #BalanceForBetter #IWD2019
